Is Your Phone Carrier-Locked? Check Before You Buy a Travel eSIM

On an iPhone, open Settings, tap General, then About, and look at Carrier Lock. If it says "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked. On Android, check your phone's settings or ask your carrier. Do this before you buy a travel eSIM: only your carrier can unlock the phone, and it can take a few days.
Why a carrier lock matters for a travel eSIM
A carrier-locked phone is set up to work with the carrier that sold it. Apple explains that unlocking is what lets you use an iPhone with different carriers, so a locked phone may not accept a travel eSIM from another provider. Checking first saves you buying a plan you can't install.
A carrier lock is a separate question from eSIM support. If you're not sure your model supports eSIM at all, see Does my device support eSIM?.
How to check on iPhone
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Look next to Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means your iPhone is unlocked.
How to check on Android
Menus differ by brand and Android version, so look for SIM or network settings on your phone, or ask your carrier directly whether the phone is locked.
If your phone is locked
Contact your carrier and ask for an unlock. Apple says only your carrier can unlock your iPhone, and it might take a few days to complete the request. When it's done, check Carrier Lock again: you should see "No SIM restrictions". If you don't, contact your carrier.
Leaving soon? Options if the unlock won't arrive in time
- Your carrier's own travel option. A locked phone still works with the carrier that locked it, so check whether your plan includes roaming or a travel pass. Our Canada roaming vs travel eSIM guide shows how carrier day passes add up.
- A spare unlocked phone. An older unlocked phone that supports eSIM can carry your travel data while your main phone keeps your number.
Already installed an eSIM and have no internet?
That's usually a settings issue rather than a lock. Work through eSIM installed but no internet.
