Japan eSIM with a Phone Number: What Travelers Actually Get
By Fei Pan

Most travel eSIMs for Japan give you mobile data only, with no Japanese phone number. Skylano's Japan plans work the same way: all 14 are data-only, with no calls or SMS. If you need a Japanese number, you'll need a separate Japanese voice plan, and you can keep your home number reachable with Wi-Fi Calling.
Do travel eSIMs come with a Japanese phone number?
Usually not. A travel eSIM connects your phone to the internet; it isn't a Japanese phone line. You can still use internet calling and messaging apps over the data connection, but you won't get a number that people in Japan can call or text.
For a quick rundown of what a Skylano eSIM does and doesn't include, see Does Skylano eSIM include calls, SMS and hotspot?.
What Skylano's Japan plans include
Skylano lists 14 single-country Japan plans: 8 with a fixed amount of data and 6 daily plans. None of them include voice calls or SMS, and all of them allow hotspot sharing. They connect through Japanese networks including NTT docomo, KDDI/au, SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile (the 50GB, 180-day plan lists NTT docomo only).
A few examples, as listed on November 2, 2026:
- 1GB for 7 days: $2.49
- 3GB for 30 days: $3.99
- 10GB for 30 days: $9.49
- 20GB for 30 days: $16.49
- 1GB per day: $2.49 per day (daily plan); after the daily 1GB, data slows to 384 Kbps

When you might need a Japanese number
Some travelers need a local number for a specific job: receiving a verification code from a Japanese service, leaving a callback number for a restaurant booking, or staying long enough to need a local contact number. If none of those apply, data is usually all you need for maps, trains, translation and messaging.
Your options if you do need a number
- A Japanese voice eSIM. Some Japan-focused providers sell voice eSIMs with a real Japanese mobile number (070, 080 or 090). These are separate from data-only travel eSIMs, and the provider may ask for ID.
- Your home number. You can keep your home line active next to a travel eSIM and use Wi-Fi Calling, if your carrier supports it. That doesn't give you a Japanese number, but people can still reach you on your usual one.
For how to keep your home line while using a data eSIM, read Can I keep my original number while using an eSIM?.
If you only need data
Pick a plan by trip length and how much you stream or share. Setup steps for both phone types are in Japan eSIM for iPhone and Android, and city-by-city tips are in our Japan travel and plans guide.
