In Skylano's plan data on November 3, 2026, single-country eSIM plans list anywhere from 1 local network (France, Canada, Australia) to 4 (Japan, South Africa), because a travel eSIM doesn't have a network of its own. In each country, it connects through the local mobile networks that its plan lists, and that list changes from one country to the next. So the same phone with the same kind of eSIM can be on a different network, or have a different number of networks to work with, in every country you visit.
Why does your eSIM depend on local partner networks?
Skylano's Terms, effective July 2, 2026, say it plainly: "Skylano is not a mobile network operator." Instead, "Mobile connectivity is provided through third-party carriers, roaming partners, eSIM suppliers, telecommunications infrastructure, and technical service providers." The Japan page adds that the plan activates when it connects to a supported local network. Which networks count as supported is set by the plan you bought for that country.
If you're new to how eSIMs work in general, start with What is an eSIM?. This article covers one thing: why the network side of your eSIM changes at every border, using the networks listed for 184 countries and regions.
How many networks does each country list?
Skylano lists 1,875 single-country plans for 184 countries and regions. Every one of them names its local networks. Counting the networks named across each country's plans, for the 183 countries and regions other than Thailand:
| Networks listed | Countries and regions |
|---|---|
| 1 | 115 |
| 2 | 52 |
| 3 | 12 |
| 4 | 4 |
16 examples from the same data:
| Country | Networks listed | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile, KDDI/au, SoftBank | 4 |
| South Africa | Cell C, MTN, Telkom, Vodacom | 4 |
| Italy | TIM, Iliad, Wind | 3 |
| Indonesia | Telkomsel, XL, Indosat | 3 |
| Vietnam | Viettel Mobile, Vinaphone, MobiFone | 3 |
| Thailand | TrueMove H (listed in our plan data as both "True Move" and "TrueMove H"), DTAC | — |
| United States | Verizon, AT&T | 2 |
| United Kingdom | EE, 3 | 2 |
| Germany | O2, Vodafone | 2 |
| South Korea | SKTelecom, LG Uplus | 2 |
| Mexico | Telcel, AT&T | 2 |
| France | Orange | 1 |
| Canada | Rogers Wireless | 1 |
| Australia | Optus | 1 |
| Türkiye | Vodafone | 1 |
| United Arab Emirates | Du | 1 |
Note: network names are shown as they appear in Skylano's plan data. Thailand isn't in the 183-country counts above; its networks are listed by name in the table. A longer list means more local networks the plan is set up to use; it doesn't tell you how any one network performs where you are, and this article doesn't compare that.
The reasons are the same wherever you travel. For how this plays out in 1 country, where all 13 plans list Verizon and AT&T, see US eSIM networks and daily data limits.
Can plans for the same country list different networks?
In 182 of the 184 countries and regions, every plan for that country lists the same networks. There are two exceptions:
- Japan: the 50GB, 180-day plan ($56.49) lists NTT docomo only. The other 13 Japan plans list all four networks.
- Thailand: the 50GB, 10-day plan ($15.99) lists True only. The other 13 Thailand plans list True and DTAC.
In these 2 countries, 1 plan differs, so if the network matters to you, check it on the plan you're about to buy, not just on the country.
How do multi-country plans list networks?
Skylano's 138 multi-country plans work differently. Each one gives a single list of local operators for the whole plan, from 2 to 53 names, but doesn't say which operator is used in which country. For example, the Southeast Asia 1GB 7 Days plan ($4.99) covers 12 destinations and lists 18 operators in total, and each of the 8 options for Skylano's 41-country Europe plan lists 53 operator names; see the Europe eSIM country list.
So a single-country plan tells you the networks in that 1 country; a multi-country plan tells you the networks across the route. For when one plan for several countries makes sense, read Regional eSIM for multi-country travel.
How do you check the networks before you buy?
- Open the country's page from Skylano destinations. Each page has a Networks line. On the Japan page, for example, it names 4 networks: "NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile, KDDI/au, SoftBank, and other local network providers."
- Check the plan you pick. As the Japan and Thailand examples show, 1 plan can list a different set of networks from the others.
- Confirm at checkout. Section 4 of Skylano's Terms says supported networks are shown on the product page or the checkout page.
If your eSIM is already installed and you're not getting data after you arrive, that's a settings issue rather than a network-list issue. Follow the 7 settings checks in eSIM installed but no internet, 1 of which is selecting a supported network by hand.
Who is this not for?
This page may not fit you in 3 cases:
- You need calls, SMS or a local phone number. All 2,013 Skylano plans are data-only, whatever networks they list. In Skylano's plan feed on 3 November 2026, all 2,013 plans list voice and SMS as not included. Skylano's Terms say that, unless a product page expressly states otherwise, plans don't include voice calls, SMS, emergency calling or a local phone number.
- Your destination has no single-country plan. 4 destinations, Kuwait, New Caledonia, Taiwan and Vanuatu, appear only in multi-country plans, so their networks are listed for the whole plan; no plan in the feed lists Kosovo.
- You want to know which network performs better where you'll be. This page counts the networks listed for 184 countries and regions; it doesn't compare how any of them perform.
